About us

Democritus Mechatronics and Automation (DMA) was founded in 2022 as part of the Mechatronics and System Automation (MeSA) Lab of the Department of Electrical and Electronic Engineering at Democritus University of Thrace. Guided by our faculty advisor, Assist. Prof. Loukas Bampis, our team is dedicated to the research and development of mechatronic systems, automation solutions, and robotics.

With a strong foundation in engineering and innovation, DMA provides students with hands-on experience in designing, building, and programming cutting-edge technologies while competing in prestigious competitions.

Democritus Mechatronics and Automation (DMA) is the official student research team of Democritus University of Thrace, dedicated to pushing the boundaries of mechatronics, automation, and robotics. We design, develop, and build cutting-edge systems to compete in national and international competitions while contributing to research in innovative technologies.

At DMA, we strive to bridge the gap between theory and hands-on experience. Our mission is to create advanced mechatronic and automation solutions, fostering an environment where students can grow their skills, collaborate, and turn ideas into reality. Our vision is to make innovation accessible to everyone and contribute to the evolution of technology through research and development.

🚀 Engineering & Innovation: We design and build robotic systems and automation projects from scratch.
🏆 Competitions & Challenges: We participate in engineering competitions, putting our skills to the test.
🔬 Research & Development: We contribute to scientific advancements in mechatronics and automation.
💡 Learning & Growth: We provide a platform for students to learn, collaborate, and innovate.

Our Subteams

The Marketing Team is responsible for shaping DMA’s public image, managing our social media presence, and creating engaging content. From designing promotional materials to organizing recruitment campaigns and sponsorship outreach, this team ensures that DMA’s work reaches a wider audience and attracts new opportunities.

The Construction Team brings ideas to life by designing and assembling the physical structure of our projects. Whether it’s crafting a robot’s frame or building complex mechanical systems, this team focuses on durability, efficiency, and precision. Their expertise in CAD design, 3D printing, and material selection is crucial for every DMA project.

The Programming Team is the brain behind our robots and automation systems. This team develops software, algorithms, and control systems that enable our projects to function efficiently. Whether it’s coding in Python, C++, or ROS, they ensure that every line of code translates into real-world performance.

The Electronics Team is responsible for designing, assembling, and optimizing the electrical and electronic systems of our projects. From circuit design and PCB development to sensor integration and power management, this team ensures that all components work together seamlessly to bring automation to life.

ICUAS 2022 // Our Run

In this video, Democritus Mechatronics and Automation (DMA) presents its competition entry for the ICUAS 2022 UAV Competition, where our team developed an autonomous drone capable of navigating an urban environment, detecting fire hazards, and responding effectively.

🛸 Autonomous Navigation: The UAV uses advanced path-planning and obstacle avoidance to maneuver through a simulated city.
🔥 Fire Target Detection: Using computer vision, the drone identifies fire targets modeled as AR Markers.
🎯 Precision Fire Suppression: Once a fire is detected, the UAV deploys a ball filled with extinguishing material to neutralize the threat.

This project demonstrates our expertise in robotics, automation, and real-world problem-solving, showcasing how UAVs can assist in critical emergency response scenarios.
